Building a firepit in a Colorado pithouse. Semi-subterranean pithouses provided well-insulated abodes for Basketmaker people and for some Archaic dwellers as well. Roof support poles were placed in holes dug around the pithouse foundation, and the earthen walls were occasionally lined with sandstone slabs.
