Draw Pictograph Symbols
Place a long piece of butcher paper on wall. Students draw own pictograph symbol(s) with paint. A common motif is a hand after being dipped in paint-or with paint blown through a tube around the hands (can be messy). Each "artist" can explain what the symbols mean, if anything. Discuss how they would feel if someone vandalized their work and how so many rock art panels are being destroyed by vandals today. When students are out of the room vandalize your own pictograph, or put "removable" graffiti over the panel-don't permanently destroy the students' work. Discuss "non-renewable resources," including archaeological sites.
Brew Mormon Tea (green-stick bush)
If available, pick on private land (with permission).
Face Painting
Have a professional face painter or parent volunteer paint designs on students. If brave, do it yourself, or have students paint each others' faces (see design samples below).
Make Head Rings
Make head rings of dish towels, rolled and fastened with large safety pins. Place on heads and balance large, unbreakable things on the rings. Discuss importance of good posture and balance. This really is a fun activity.
